MASS MEDIA & SOCIETY:

Course Description:
This course is designed to introduce students to the basic aspects of a variety of information/entertainment media (television, radio/music, Internet, print, electronic/digital media, film, video games) and to examine the role each medium plays in society. Points of consideration include: the relationship between the medium and its message; the effect of media/messages upon society and vice versa; the creation/process of various media and general media issues (censorship, ethics, etc.).

W.I.L.D. (BROADCAST JOURNALISM / TELEVISION PRODUCTION):

Course Description:
This course is designed to allow students to collaborate on the production of Benjamin Russell High School’s weekly closed-circuit television show, W.I.L.D. Basic elements of single-camera operation and videography techniques; on-air talent techniques; writing for broadcasts; concept development; audio management, and digital video editing are all introduced and practiced. Students will also create special segments designed for broadcast on WAXC-WETU (local television).
Course Prerequisites:
Students must apply for Fall or Spring semesters during March. Students will be notified of their acceptance and should make any schedule changes accordingly.
CINDER (NEWSPAPER):
Course Duration:
Year-long. (Some out-of-class time is also required.) This course is taken on an alternating block schedule.
Course Description:
This course is designed to allow students to collaborate on the production of Benjamin Russell High School’s student newspaper,
The Cinder. Student positions/assignments will vary upon experience. Aspects covered include (but are not limited to): story development; interviewing; news-writing/Associated Press style; layout/design; proofing; advertising sales; ad composition; photography; digital photography editing; scanning; image-setting/printing.Prerequisites:
Students must apply for The Cinder staff during March. Students will be notified of their acceptance and should make any schedule changes accordingly. Only rising sophomores, juniors and seniors may apply.
ECHO (YEARBOOK):
Course Duration:
1 ½ semesters (3 terms / 27 weeks) long. (Some out-of-class time is also required.) This course is taken on an alternating block schedule.
Course Description:
This course is designed to allow students to collaborate on the production of Benjamin Russell High School’s yearbook, The ECHO. Student positions/assignments will vary upon experience. Aspects covered include (but are not limited to): story/theme development; copywriting/caption-writing; layout/design; advertising sales; ad composition; photography; digital photography editing; scanning; proofing; image-setting/printing. Picture scheduling is also a key component of this class.
Prerequisites:
Students must apply for The ECHO staff during March. Students will be notified of their acceptance and should make any schedule changes accordingly. Only rising sophomores, juniors and seniors may apply. Accepted students should make arrangements to take a 9-week course/assistantship the last nine weeks of the school year or be prepared for study hall.
